The Oakland Observatory was established in downtown Oakland in 1883 through a gift from Anthony Chabot. At the time, it provided the community public access to a telescope and for decades the observatory served as the official timekeeping station for the entire Bay Area. Today, it is known as The Chabot Science & Space Center, a destination for astronomy and science education. It’s also home to Nellie, Rachel and Leah, the three largest telescopes on the west coast.
