Heinold’s First and Last Chance waterfront saloon has been serving sailors and inspiring young writers since 1883. Also known as “Jack London’s Rendezvous”, it was the inspiration for scenes in Call of the Wild and The Sea Wolf. Built from remnants of an old whaling ship, this humble structure continues to operate as a bar in its original location which still stands today. Since 2000, it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
